INFOSEC Log 4: Legal vs. Ethical

Not much happened these weeks because the school held the School of Computing and Information Technology (SOCIT) Week, and most of our schoolwork was put on hold for almost the entirety of the week. I did eat some good donuts and enjoy a great discussion by our professor in INFOSEC, so it was pretty good.

The week after that, we had a lesson on ethics in general, and the ethics of hacking back. We learned that hacking back is, most of the time, wrong and is widely considered as illegal. As said, it is as illegal as hacking a person in the first place. So, yeah, hacking back is very illegal, kids, and you should never do it—even if that person hacked you in the first place and you're just defending yourself. Even defensive attacks are offensive in nature.

We also had our midterm defense these weeks. It was a pretty hard defense, I gotta say. I had to show how Bitcoin functioned and, in the end, I literally had to draft and write the entire midterm research paper for my team. It was alright, and I learned a lot of stuff about Bitcoin in the process. I learned that, in the end, Bitcoin is actually an ingenious mechanism with a lot of built-in countermeasures against fraud and other stuff. Overall, it was a pretty good presentation.
